I’m planning my wedding and every detail has been sorted out by now–there’s only one left: cake toppers. I never really liked the cake toppers that were silly–cartoons or TV personality-inspired cake toppers always struck me as a little too silly for a wedding day. However, I like the idea of something creative. My brother and sister-in-law used Salt and Pepper shakers in the shape of books as their cake toppers. I was appropriate in a book-themed wedding! I’ve thought about perhaps making stick figures out of pipe cleaners or something else crafty–perhaps that is a little too reminiscent of fourth grade art class, though. In the end I expect I’ll want to do something in keeping with the vintage theme of our wedding; an old cake topper from the 40s or 50s, one that’s topped cakes before and may top cakes in the future. I like the idea of a heritage piece that’s been used for many years in many different couples’ weddings.

To some it may seem insignificant, but they have never seen the smiles and experienced the jubilation of kids faces when they sit on Santa’s lap. Of course, with the job, comes the oath of secrecy, especially since my town is so close knit, it’s like a game to find out just who Santa really is. Well, that where my story really starts, because last year, I chanced upon a really big surprise… It was nearing Christmas, so I routinely went to retrieve my Santa Costume to wash and iron it, but it was nowhere to be found. To anyone else, this would be just a strange occurrence, or a misplacing, but I was very keen on it’s placement, and for it to be missing, meant that someone had taken it. A frantic search erupted, but it was to know avail. Then I remembered how I became ‘Santa’ in the first instance, I was first an elf. How selfish of me to have kept the post to myself all these years… True enough, when walking through the mall a week later, I could hear the iconic laugh that I once bore, “Ho, ho, ho!” and two thoughts came instantly as I saw kids excitedly lining up to sit on Santa’s lap. The first is that you don’t have to be in a red and white costume to enjoy the true Christmas spirit, and secondly, that I really need a better hiding place!

I just spent the day at the Home Depot to try and find some tile for my kitchen and pantry. Contrary to what you might think there is not a great deal to chose from, the reason being the new laminated flooring that looks like hardwood. They had so many boxes of the flooring that I was surprised. When I found the ceramic tile they had quite a bit of tile, but I needed a greenish tint and there was not one tile to be had. From there I went to Menards and to tell the truth they had less than Home Depot. I was going to have to put this down myself and I needed some instructions. I asked one of the associates if he could help me and he was very courteous and asked what I needed to know. I told him I had a small kitchen that I wanted to cover with ceramic tile and I did not know what I needed to do the job, or how to to do the job, and they did not have the color of tile I had to have. We went again to look at the tile and sure enough there was not what I wanted. I told him I had to have what matched the rest of the kitchen and I obviously I had to get it else where. But I asked him if he would tell me how to install the tile? He told me it was pretty easy, except for cutting the pieces that fit around the door. OH-OH. This was something I had given no thought to.I asked how did you cut the ceramic, he said you needed a tool that cuts tile, this sounded bad. The machine was kind of expensive, maybe I should think of using another tile. I asked if the store did these sort of jobs, he said absolutely. They are coming to measure on Monday, I think I made the right decision.
